The 2011 North face Masters at Snowbird

The 2011 North face Masters kicked off in fine fashion with a big storm hitting Utah right before the event. I was worried driving down there as I had heard that Snowbird had received rain from top to bottom.... never good. The day before the comp I was treated to a fun powder day with my great friends from Kirkwood- Rose, Adam, Casey and Dave. Mineral Basin opened in the afternoon, besides the lack of visibility the snow was epic. The resort kept Silver fox (which was the venue for the first day of competition) closed to the public the day before the comp which was great. The athletes were allowed only 2 inspection runs through to pick their lines. During inspection I found that the icy rain crust was well and truly there so my plan was to find the best snow and have some powder turns for my run. I picked lookers right for my venue after checking out the left side which was choppy and hard packed, which was not for me! The organizers ran the men first that day as they thought the weather was going to turn from bluebird to grey. It didn't, it held off so off we went in the afternoon. I was first to go. I dropped off the ridge into my line hoping I could hold my edge on an icy section I needed to ride to get to the powder section I had been eyeing off. I got in and it was way worse than I had thought, I slid for way too long on one edge...never scores well!! I did get a great powder run in after that, I had some great turns, and all in all I enjoyed my run. I watched the rest of the ladies come down after that and was blown away by the level of the competition this year. I didn't make the cut to the finals I placed 20th. Both the ladies and the men that advanced to the finals were treated to a blue bird day with some fresh snow on North Baldy. They put on an awesome show and threw down, although it would have been awesome to be up there myself it was great to watch. There was nothing too disappointing about being knocked out by such fierce competition but it did wake me up to the level I had to step up to.......so I will, bring it on Crystal Mountain!!!!
